Steve Ward

Originally from Mackay, now based on the Gold Coast.

Part-time sparky, full-time fisho with a healthy addiction to screaming drags and depleting piss. I’m probably better known for tossing junkies off balconies – but we’ll save that yarn for another day.

Fishing’s in the blood – the old boy had me handlining when I was about 2 or 3 years old, and since then, it’s turned into a full-blown obsession. There’s just nothin’ better than hittin’ the water with the boys, chasing fish and smashing a few tins… responsibly, of course.

These days, I’m all about raising the next gen of fishos. Watching my young fella lose his mind over a few flatties is just about as good as it gets.

THE MAD HUEYS Q & A

1. Most Memorable Fish Caught:
- Absolute tank of an 8-bar grouper in 330m of water on a 10-day liveaboard out to Saumarez Reef in the Coral Sea

- Topwater doggie in just 10m of water out at Eastern Fields in PNG

- Spot tail bass while trekking shallow freshwater streams in the Solomon Islands

2. Most Memorable Party:
Might not be the most memorable (for obvious reasons), but one of the best nights was up in Mission Beach fishin’ and filming the first Topwater Invitational. Ran into a bunch of loose units who’d decked out a full-size party bus travelling around Oz – called themselves “Wogs on Wheels.” Safe to say things escalated quickly. Beers depleted in record time..
